Summer 2026 HVAC Equipment Guide: What Contractors Need to Know

Get Ahead of the Summer Rush

South Florida summers don't wait — and neither do your customers. With peak cooling season already underway, now is the time to make sure you're stocked, trained, and ready to move equipment fast. This guide covers the biggest equipment and refrigerant changes heading into summer 2026, plus the accessories and prep steps that separate the contractors who thrive from the ones who scramble.

SEER2 Equipment: What's Changed and What to Stock

The shift to SEER2 minimum efficiency standards is now fully in effect across all residential and light commercial equipment. Here's what that means on the ground:

  • New minimums are real. 14.3 SEER2 is the floor for split-system air conditioners in the Southeast. Equipment that doesn't meet this threshold can no longer be installed — not just sold.
  • Higher-efficiency units are moving faster. Contractors are finding that homeowners are more receptive to 16–18 SEER2 systems when framed around long-term energy savings, especially with Florida utility rates.
  • Matched systems matter more than ever. AHRI-certified matched pairs are required for SEER2 ratings to hold. Mixing and matching condenser and air handler combinations from different manufacturers can void efficiency ratings and create warranty headaches. Stick to certified combinations.
  • What to stock: Carrier, Bryant, Goodman, and LG all have strong SEER2-compliant lineups. If you're not already pre-ordering high-efficiency condensers and air handlers for the summer peak, do it now — lead times are tightening.

The Refrigerant Transition: R-32 and R-454B Are Here

The R-410A phase-down is no longer a future concern — it's the present reality. Here's where things stand heading into summer 2026:

R-410A Production caps are in place under the AIM Act. Expect continued price volatility and tighter supply through the season. If you're servicing existing R-410A systems, buy your cylinders early and don't count on last-minute availability.

R-32 and R-454B (A2L Refrigerants) New equipment is shipping with A2L refrigerants — primarily R-32 and R-454B. These are lower-GWP alternatives that meet EPA requirements, but they come with important handling differences:

  • A2L refrigerants are mildly flammable. They require A2L-rated recovery machines, manifold gauges, and leak detectors. Standard R-410A equipment is not compatible.
  • Technician certification matters. EPA 608 certification covers A2L refrigerants, but hands-on training with A2L-specific handling procedures is strongly recommended before your first job.
  • Ventilation requirements apply. Work areas must be adequately ventilated when working with A2L systems. Review manufacturer guidelines for each unit.
  • What to stock: A2L-compatible recovery equipment, A2L-rated manifold sets, and updated leak detectors. We carry the tools and refrigerant cylinders you need — ask our counter staff about current availability at any of our three locations.

The right accessories protect your installs, reduce callbacks, and keep customers happy through the hottest months. Don't leave the supply house without these:

Insulation & Line Sets

  • Armaflex or equivalent closed-cell foam insulation for suction lines — critical in South Florida humidity to prevent condensation and energy loss
  • Pre-insulated line sets for faster installs on new construction and replacements

Electrical Protection

  • Surge protectors and hard start kits are a must in Florida's lightning-heavy summer season. A single power surge can take out a compressor — a $15 surge protector is cheap insurance
  • Proper disconnect boxes and breaker sizing for new SEER2 equipment (check amperage specs — some higher-efficiency units draw differently than older models)

Tape & Sealing

  • Foil tape rated for HVAC applications for duct connections and vapor barriers
  • Mastic sealant for duct sealing on retrofit jobs

Condensate Management

  • Float switches and secondary drain pans — Florida's humidity means condensate issues are a when, not an if
  • Condensate pumps for attic and closet installs

Preparing for the Summer Rush: A Contractor Checklist

✅ Pre-order equipment now. Condenser and air handler lead times stretch in June and July. Get your orders in early.

✅ Audit your refrigerant stock. Know what you have on hand for R-410A service calls and what A2L equipment you're likely to encounter.

✅ Verify your tools are A2L-compatible. Recovery machines, gauges, and leak detectors all need to be rated for A2L refrigerants before you work on new equipment.

✅ Train your techs. If your team hasn't had hands-on A2L training, schedule it now — before a job forces the issue.

✅ Stock accessories in bulk. Surge protectors, float switches, and insulation move fast in summer. Buy ahead.

✅ Know your warranty requirements. Manufacturers are strict about matched systems, proper refrigerant handling, and documentation. A missed step can void a warranty and cost you a customer.
